Your Sutherland Shire home’s water heater is a complicated and integral appliance.
It’s advisable to have yearly maintenance performed on this piece of equipment to detect hot water heater element problems, among other potential issues.
Failure to do so can lead to any number of difficulties in the proper functioning of your water heater.
As far as knowing when it’s time for water heater element replacement, you need to know what are some bad water heater element symptoms.
What Are Some Bad Water Heater Element Symptoms?
In a nutshell, the most obvious problem is if the water isn’t heating properly.
If you have the thermostat set to the recommended settings (usually from 120-140 degrees), and the hot water you’re receiving isn’t that hot or there is never enough of it, the water heater element testing is recommended, as it’s probably near the end of its lifespan.
This hot water heater element problem means it needs to be fixed or replaced. If you have a gas water heater, this is called the gas thermocouple.
Bad water heater element problems should be handled by a professional, as this appliance has elements involving the use and handling of hot water, gas, and electricity.
Have Water Heater Element Testing Before Replacement
You can perform water heater element testing yourself. Ideally, have a professional do this like your best local Sutherland Shire plumber.
If you want to test it yourself, you need to have a multimeter and a screwdriver.
On the water heater, remove the access panel. Don’t touch any of the wires. Since water heaters use 240 volts, set your multimeter to that setting or greater.
Locate the reset button and place one of the multimeter probes on one of the lines above it. Place the other probe on the outside of the water heater tank.
Now set the multimeter to the setting RX1K. Test the meter by touching the probes together; the needle should go all the way over.
Remove either one of the wires, doesn’t matter which one. Now take the probes and place them on each element screw. If the meter doesn’t move, your water heater element testing is complete as your element is bad and needs to be replaced.
If it does move, the element is still good, and you need to check for other bad water heater element symptoms.
